A rare guided visit to the UNESCO Heritage region of Northern Italy, called “Cinque Terre” the famous seashore second only to the Amalfi Coast. The 5 tiny villages of the rugged seaside: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are sheltered and hidden by rugged outcrops, some of them are accessible only by boat This tour also includes the sunny Sorentine coast with the sunshine island of Capri and romantic hills towns of Tuscany.
DAY 1 Sunday
ROMA – MONTEPULCIANO – PIENZA – SIENA
Departue at 8 a.m. from the meeting point or pickup at the hotel from 7.30 a.am. Meet your tour leader and drive through the rolling hills of Tuscany’s Chianti region to Montepulciano an ancient tiny village perched on the hilltop with Medieval buildings and spectacular view to the surrounding countryside. We will stop for a visit at a wine cellar to try the local specialty wine, the Nobile di Montepulciano as well as local ham, cheese and salami.
Drive to PIENZA, the Renaissance town built during Pope Pius II, then continue the SIENA, to visit the old Medieval center, one of the most authentic and unique medieval squares of Europe. Admire the cobblestone streets and alleys adorned by late medieval palaces. The sightseeing tour will end in the Piazza del Campo with its spectacular Cathedral. This is one of the most beautiful squares in the world and site of the famous 600 years old horse-race, called “Il Palio”. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. D.
DAY 2 Monday
SIENA – SAN GIMIGNANO – TAVERNELLE – CHIANTI AREA – PISA – LA SPEZIA
Departure after breakfast to SAN GIMIGNANO, a city of Medieval “skyscrapers” with its many towers, frescoes and other art treasures. Continue to Tavernelle Val di Pesa located within the CHIANTI’s “Gallo Nero” region, where we visit a farmhouse to have an excellent wine tasting with light lunch. Depart for Pisa, upon arrival free time to climb upto the Leaning Tower or other activites on your own. After the break walking tour of the Piazza dei Miracoli, (The Square of Miracleas) to the with the famous Leaning Tower (exterior visit), The Baptistery and other beautiful monuments. Drive to LA SPEZIA, the gateway city to the Cinque Terre aera. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in La Specia. B D.
DAY 3 Tuesday
LA SPEZIA – PORTOVENERE – GOLFO DEI POETI – CINQUE TERRE – LA SPEZIA
Today is one of the highlights of this romantic tour of Italy dedicated to the discovery of one of the most enchanting places on earth.
The five villages, “CINQUE TERRE” is an area suspended between sea and land, hanging from sheer cliffs surrounded by hills and vineyards. You will enter into a little piece of heaven. By touring the coast line by boat, you will have the possibility to admire this amazing picture-perfect landscape from the seaside. (*In the event of rough sea, the visit will be done partly by coach and partly by train.) During the tour, the boat will reach Portovenere and the most important villages.
You will be able to stop and go ashore at PORTO VENERE, VERNAZZA, MONTEROSSO and visit them at leisure.
PORTOVENERE: Portovenere, on the Gulf of Poets, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its picturesque harbor is lined with brightly colored houses, while narrow medieval streets lined with shops lead up the hill from the ancient city gate to the castle. VERNAZZA, the small fishing village is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy with its very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country.
MONTEROSSO: It is the largest of the five coastal villages. Its amazing beaches, its beautiful reefs and the sea’s crystal clear waters, make this one of the most popular stops on the Ligurian Riviera. Board the train from Monterosso and arrive in La Spezia. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in La Spezia. B.D.
DAY 4 (Wednesday)
LA SPEZIA – CARRARA MARBLE CAVES – MONTECARLO DI LUCCA – ROME
After breakfast at the hotel, we will take you to CARRARA marble quarries carved deep into the mountain. This is where Michelangelo
took the raw material to create his superb masterpieces. By visiting the quarry museum you will admire ancient tools, some sculptures and the quarry man’s house. Continue to MONTECARLO DI LUCCA, a bucolic town located on the hills around Lucca. This territory is ideal for the production of top quality wine and extra virgin olive oil. We will stop and visit a farmhouse where you will be invited to taste delicious Tuscan food specialities: olive oil, local cheese, bread and wine and of course the not to be missed pasta accompanied by different local wines. Continue to Rome, arrival in the evening. Overnight at the hotel. B.
DAY 5 Thursday
ROME – NAPLES – POMPEII – SORRENTO
After breakfast 7 a.m. departure from ROME to NAPLES by coach with a multilingual tour leader. Upon arrival in Naples, we will visit the historical center with a local guide to see the Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, the Gallery of Umberto I, and the San Carlo Opera House. Continue to POMPEII, one of the most famous archeological sites in Europe where first we have a short visit to a coral and cameo factory, followed by lunch in a typical restaurant. After lunch guided tour of the ancient Roman city buried under 4-6 meters of volcanic ash and destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvio in 79 b.C. Drive to SORRENTO, a charming town of the Sorrentine Peninsula famous its beautiful views, year-round sunny climate and many orange, lemons and olives trees. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Sorrento. B L D
DAY 6 Friday
SORRENTO – CAPRI – SORRENTO
After breakfast 8 a.m. pick up at the hotel and departure to the island of Capri by ferry. Arriving on the island first we will visit the famed BLUE GROTTO (weather permitting), the AUGUSTUS GARDENS and stop at the famous Piazzetta. We will take a minibus will to the top of the island on the steep winding road to ANACAPRI from where you will have spectacular view all over the Mediterranean. Lunch in Anacapri, then return to Marina Grande where we will board the return ferry back to Sorrento. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. B L D
DAY 7 Saturday
SORRENTO – ROME
Breakfast at the hotel, then the day at leisure to rest around the pool of the hotel with fantastic views or explore the town of Sorrento, called the “Queen of the Sorrentine” peninsula. You may also visit on your own the other famous villages of the Amalfi Coast like Positano, or Amalfi. Meet your group back at the hotel by 3 p.m. . At 3.30 p.m. we will depart to travel back to Rome. Expected arrival time in Rome around 9 p.m. B.
