Venice Regata Storica September 2, 2007
A
traditional event that takes place in all of Venice on September 2nd
along the waters of the Grand Canal. The
celebration, that happened for the first time on January 10th, 1315
during the reign of Giovanni Soranzo, is made up of 2 different moments:
the historic procession and the regattas. The historical procession,
comprised of over 100 boats, re-enacts
the arrival of Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus. She renounced
her throne in favour of Venice and so, this signalled the beginning of the power
of the Serenissima (Venice) on this island of the Mediterranean.
The competitions that are held are divided into categories: Young rowers,
women, and men. The
most anticipated challenge is that of the 'champions', of the "gondolini",
which are the lighter versions of the gondolas. The
most pretisious reward is to win in Canalasso, which is what the
residents of Venice call the Grand Canal.

Il Carnevale di Putignano
Putignano, July 13th - 15th, 2007
The Putignano Carnival is one of the oldest and longest running carnivals in the world. It was made famous by it’s parade of enormous papier-mache floats – which are the principle attraction of this magnificent event. The figure that represents the Carnival is the Farinella. Particularly in the past ten years, the parade’s floats have been carrying social or political messages to lend a more 21st century feel to the carnival, as opposed to a medieval procession. However the history of the parade is definitely a historic one, as some historians have dated the event back to as early as the late 1300’s. Typically the event takes place on the three preceding Sundays before Shrove Tuesday (usually in February and on the main Carnival day itself), however this Carnival, in July, is its 2nd summer edition.

Culinary Pesto Championship in the Dukal Palace, Genova March 17, 2007

recipes are widening its use , which is no longer limited to our national dish.
It is strongly associated with Genoa and with Liguria and it is a wonderful
promoter of image, however, the more widespread its consumption becomes in the
world, with the inevitable contaminations, the more opportune it becomes to
focalize the leadership for quality in Genoa. This is how the idea came about to

true enthusiasts of the real Genoese

like to emphasize the uniqueness of Genoese

of the early 20th century, with inflexions close to Segantini’s divisionism
and with extremely modern accents that almost preannounce the chromatic
elaborations of Severini, Balla and Boccioni.

and Juliet, hosts 180 masterpieces divided into six “seventh heaven”
sections. Included are Botticelli, Pontormo, Giorgione, Lotto, Titian,
Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Carracci, Caravaggio, Guercino, El Greco, Canova,
Piranesi, Böcklin, de Chirico, Modigliani, Carrà and Pistoletto. The
exhibition reads in the malinchonic reflexion the principles of the modern
sensibility; and for some aspects it claims for it the Italian and Mediterranean
origins, developed from the entourage in Florence of Lorenzo De' Medici up to
the present days, through a continuity which is proposed in the different faces
of history and culture in a route which sees beauty sometimes like a sacred and
supreme harmony, sometimes like a shake of human psyche.

Maggio Musical Festival in Florence
April24 - June 30 2007
The oldest music festival in Italy, and one of the most famous, the Maggio
Musicale in Florence was founded in 1933 and features two months of opera,
concerts, ballet and exhibitions. Having only missed a few years during the war,
in 2007 it celebrates its 70th edition. Along with Bayreuth and Salzburg, the
Florence Music Festival ranks among the oldest, most important European music
festivals. More than this, it incorporates annual concert, opera and ballet
seasons. Today the festival resides at the centre of musical life in Florence,
based in the 2,000-seat Teatro Comunale and neighbouring Piccolo Teatro, a
small, modern theatre accommodating an audience of 600. Many great conductors
– Vittorio Gui, Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Zubin
Mehta, von Karajan and Muti – have graced the Comunale, as well as singers of
such stature as the divine Maria Callas.
